What started as a plan to breathe new life into a dilapidated Philips factory site has grown into a hip live, work environment for young and old. Strijp-S is now a household name in the area
and is also known as the cultural heart of Eindhoven.
The Urban Shopper is one of the most inspiring places on Strijp-S; a small-scale indoor shopping centre located in one of the old factory halls. A labyrinth of wooden units has been built between the rough concrete pillars to house a variety of shops. Where light bulbs used to be made, you can now browse the spaces of 20 creative entrepreneurs involved in design, art, music, fashion, vintage and craft. As you wander between the boutiques, studios and concept stores, you will discover an intriguing shop at every turn.
What is immediately noticeable is that the offering is far from mainstream. Here you won’t find dozens of shops that look the same, like in a typical city centre. Often the products are designed and made on site and you can even have your own idea developed. For a trendy haircut go to Next Best Barber. Have a dress made from a kimono at ReCreare. For trousers, step into Outfit-S. You can find design furniture at De Zitfabriek, a unique collection of Oriental and Art Deco lamps at Timeless and bric a brac can be found at Brokaatje.
